The Little Lions Fellowship 2024.
What is the Little Lions Fellowship?
Twice a year, Little Lions offers their fellowship programme to 20 young leaders. Through a series of educational mental health workshops, coaching, peer support, and a ‘community challenge’, we foster a culture where conversations are held to break down barriers and reduce stigma around mental health. In a country with only 500 psychologists serving in the public sector, the need for more community leaders to become mental health advocates is real.
Why do we offer it?
At Little Lions, we host daily free mental health workshops for children in under-resourced communities with the aim of making mental health resources easily accessible so that children can navigate through life’s challenges with a profound understanding of their mental well-being. Yet, we realise that we cannot do this alone. The fellowship programme encourages leaders to stand up and speak up, and join us in our mission of normalising mental health conversations. By hosting the fellowship we create a Pride of mental health coaches that encourages connections between the fellows and beyond.
How does it work?
The fellowship runs over the course of 4 weeks in May, during which Little Lions hosts four immersive workshops at The Bertha House in Mowbray. Fellows are trained by a team of psychologists and Little Lions coaches with extensive experience. There will be a lot of learning, sharing, discussions, group work and creativity to boost the mental health of our fellows. Upon completion of the workshop, the fellows will be divided into 4 groups to do the Little Lions mental health challenge: to come up with a community event where they put all their newly acquired knowledge into practice.
How to apply?
Applications open in April and August every year. During this period, potential fellows can sign up and Little Lions will enrol the fellows into the programme. The workshops begin in May and September and the mental health challenges will happen in June and October. After this, the fellows join our network of Little Lions Pride Advocates for ongoing peer support and advocacy, using their own Little Lions Mental Health Conversation Starter kit.
A successful applicant should:
- Be between the ages of 18 and 35 years.
- Demonstrate good public speaking and presentation skills
- Reside in Cape Town.
- Not have previously been a Little Lions Fellow.
